On Thursday, November 19th we will be celebrating the release of the 2020 Beaujolais Nouveau. Some people, mainly those who lack any sense of humor or fun, will lament this wine as not serious or worth contemplation. The truth is, they are correct, but since when does all wine have to be so serious. Those of you who shop here regularly know my name tag changes on occasion from “Head Wino” to “Wine Dude” amongst others. Beaujolais Nouveau, much like my whimsical titles, is that wonderfully simple reminder that wine is just a beverage, and a fun one, to be enjoyed amongst family and friends.

In 1951 Georges Dubouef realized the marketing potential of new wine laws in France that enabled producers in the Beaujolais region to release wine that had only just been put into the fermentation tanks weeks prior. Due to the Carbonic Maceration method of fermentation these wines were fruity and fresh and ready to rock and roll on a moment’s notice.

Races were organized to bring the wine to the Paris market as advertising gimmicks and spread throughout the world. Originally released on the 15th of November, in 1985 the release date was changed to the third Thursday of November. This little bit of marketing genius combines the release of the wine with Thanksgiving thereby creating an immediate identification of Beaujolais Nouveau with this season.

Whilst there are no races in Castle Rock for this wine, we will be tasting it as fresh as possible on Thursday between 2- 4 pm. Join us for a sip of vino and some light appetizers!
